History
The intense armoured confrontations that ensued after the successful Allied landings on Normandy's beaches had the potential to decide the war's outcome. During this period, the feared Tiger I's supremacy was put to the test by rocket-armed Typhoons from above and a newly introduced Allied tank on the ground - though initially resembling the standard Sherman, the Firefly's 17-pounder anti-tank gun was more than capable of defeating a Tiger.
The Germans quickly realised they needed to target the long-barrelled Shermans first in any skirmish, making the Firefly a priority. However, with so many Shermans present in Normandy, mistakes in identification were common and could be deadly. The era of the Tiger's dominance was waning, yet no Allied tank commander would look forward to facing one in battle.
